Thanks Darryl. He is in a band and plays electric bass. Heavy metal type of stuff. The singer is called "the screamer", think it is normal nomenclature for this type of music. Trying to convert him over to acoustic of a milder form of entertainment, but the inoculation doesn't seem to have taken........!!! Still holding out hope though.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Having some very small part in helping someone do this makes it all worthwhile.

Wow. Yet another seriously gifted shredder. Pity about the piece of music though.

Retired from concrete formwork and loving learning about wood ....
32 years as what they told me was being a carpenter but I always built with plywood and doublehead Nails

I love wood and the beauty I see in it and I never believed I could have the patience to do something like this

My great-granddaddy carved this in 1939. He played but couldn't afford his own instrument so he made it. Finish is shoe polish.

My professional career work is rarely the type that produces a tangible product. While the rewards are great, they are by nature destined to be mostly intrinsic. There is very rarely an opportunity to have "something to show for it" aside from a recording or video, and who sits around and listens to or watches their own stuff anyway? A paycheck sometimes isn't enough to lay at the feet of our loved ones and hope to be deemed worthy.

Besides...... these 3 yahoos of mine are gonna need something to play, and their kids will too.

Give it 15 or so years Tom. I was an electric player, long hair, etc, until I my early 30s. Now, I never touch my electric. Can't sell my electric though. I love her too much.

When I was seven, I heard Jesse Fuller at a house concert, and shook his hand. He signed this album, a new release. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y__s9xKepGU I was (and am) a huge fan.

When I was twenty-two, a musician friend commissioned me to build an instrument inspired by Jesse Fuller's "Fotdella" http://www.bluesartstudio.at/Komponenten/jess.jpg (The foot-powered bass on the left.)

These days I build classical guitars, and do French polish finishing. Go figure.

This exact YouTube video is why I caught the bug. Trolling around the net one day I stumbled upon this and fell in love with the sound from this old archtop. I started researching archtops with the intent to buy. Determined that I wasn't going to settle for anything less then a quallity instrument, this was quickly shut down when I seen the price tags that went with higher end archtops. Then somehow I stumbled on Bennedetto's book on amazon and thought "You know if I can't afford to buy it, I'll save money and build it". Now I realize how completly wrong that statement is, but I have been totally facinated by it and have been working towards that goal since. Still working towards building my first but after 5 years I've not lost a bit of motivation.

I build for moments like this: my cousin discovering his new surprise guitar for his birthday!

And I build to please myself too, because that's the best hobby in the world :)

That's an excellent photo, when was is taken?
